El pasado sábado (29 de agosto) cientos de autocines y cines al aire libre en los Estados Unidos y Canadá emitieron un concierto de METALLICA como parte de la serie "Encore Drive-In Nights" (mira las fotos más abajo).
El concierto fue grabado tres semanas antes, el 10 de agosto, en la bodega Gundlach Bundschu, a unos 30 minutos en coche desde la sede de la banda en San Rafael, California. Posteriormente fue editado y mezclado por el propio equipo de producción de la banda siguiendo los más altos estándares posibles.
Los asistentes pudieron escuchar el concierto a través de su radio FM o por los altavoces del propio autocine.
En una entrevista para el Albuquerque Journal antes del evento, el director ejecutivo de Encore Live, Walter Kinzie, dijo lo siguiente:
"Lo que la gente no se da cuenta es que es una versión de audio mucho más clara que lo que se ven en un espectáculo. El audio será nítido. Todo se ha producido en formato estéreo HD, por lo que será una combinación perfecta para su radio de FM en su furgoneta y su coche. Simplemente enciéndalo y prepárese. Parte de la magia de esa noche es cuando estás allí con un par de cientos de coches y todos tienen sus radios encendidas y todos están en la misma emisora. Esto crea un tipo de atmósfera realmente mágica que es muy divertida y súper heavy".
Según el Sonoma Index-Tribune, menos de media docena de lugareños se dieron cuenta de que la banda de heavy metal más grande del mundo se grabó con vistas al viñedo de la bodega de Sonoma interpretando en secreto algunos de sus mayores éxitos sin público.
La banda ha estado ensayando durante dos semanas en su cuartel, mientras que el equipo de METALLICA se alojó en 30 habitaciones dentro del Hotel Pueblo Inn de Sonoma durante casi dos semanas. Todos se sometieron a varias pruebas de COVID antes de que METALLICA tocara el concierto secreto sin que ninguno de sus fans asistiera.
James Hetfield comentó lo siguiente durante el concierto:
"Está bien volver a tocar. No estamos seguros de lo que todos han estado haciendo, pero sé que han estado escuchando música y han estado rezando por algo en vivo a lo que pudieran aferrarse. Porque la música nos ayuda en todas las cosas, incluyendo esta".
