Compuesta por James Hetfield y Lars Ulrich en 1982, "Seek And Destroy" es una de las canciones más queridas de METALLICA y una de las más veces ha interpretado en directo la banda desde que se publicó en su primer disco "Kill 'Em All".
Según reveló el propio Ulrich en 1993, "Seek And Destroy" está inspirada en "Dead Reckoning" de DIAMOND HEAD, una de las bandas que más han influido a METALLICA:
"Sí, 'Seek and Destroy' está tomada de alguna canción de DIAMOND HEAD, es 'Dead Reckoning'. En ésta se inspiró en gran medida 'Seek and Destroy', por así decirlo".
La banda entró al estudio para grabar la canción después de haberla interpretado en directo durante más de un año. Gracias a esto se puede percibir la rabia y la fuerza del tema en la versión de estudio. En la "Guía Musical de Metallica", de Malcolm Dome y Mick Wall se comenta este punto:
"Para cuando la banda fue al estudio a grabar esta pieza, estaba bien familiarizada con ella gracias a numerosas veces que la había tocado en vivo, ¡Y se nota!, ninguna canción de este disco es tocada tan apretada ni tan furiosamente como esta...".
En cuanto a la letra, "Seek And Destroy" habla sobre el impulso de matar, pero no literalmente. Es una historia de persecución, de rastrear y buscar al enemigo para después destruirlo. Una interpretación del tema podría ser la autodestrucción de la sociedad en la que vivimos:
"...No hay escape y eso es seguro. Este es el fin, ya no lo tomaremos. Dile adiós al mundo en el que vives. Siempre estuviste tomando y ahora estas dando...".
Se podría considerar a "Seek And Destroy" como el primer verdadero éxito de METALLICA y la esencia más pura del grupo de thrash metal.
